i'm embarrassed, but i shouldn't be.....

Stomach Cramps

i went to the doctor this week to talk to him about some symptoms i've been having for a while now. i pretty much knew what the likely diagnosis was and i was right, but since he has confirmed what i am suffering from i have found it difficult to talk about with anyone except Sir. i am embarrassed to have this condition, even though it's a common one, there's nothing i can do about it and it's not my fault.....

i have Irritable Bowel Syndrome - "IBS-A" (more info here if you want it). The doctor has sent me away to keep a detailed food and drink diary plus a diary of all my symptoms over the  next 2 weeks to see if there is any link between the two. Then he may trial me on one or more of the treatments available (probably peppermint oil capsules first) to see if any of them help. And he has recommended i get 30mins of gentle exercise each day (walking, swimming, etc), try using probiotic yoghurts and try to keep as stress-free as possible, including having alternative therapies to help me relax if needed.

So that's my news, i'll keep you updated as and when i find out more about my particular version of this condition.

hi sweet girl there is nothing to be embarrassed about it, a lot of people have this including myself, as long as you keep on top of what the dr has recommended it helps to control it.

Take care

you will be happy to have a diagnosis when they work out how to make you feel better.

(and isn't it funny how much we can admit on our blogs that others would be embarrassed by and this stuff still bothers us)

I also have IBS. For me, the key is watching my fiber intake. If I am stressed and not eating enough fiber the symptoms come. I Obviously hold my stress in my stomach. I also have a slight lactose intolerance so I really watch my dairy intake - especially late at night before bed. Some people have a lot of luck with the probiotic yogurts. I often use miralax to help stay "regular". There are rarely clear answers. You will have to find out what your triggers are and design a plan that work for you. It may take some trial and error but you will figure it out. Be patient with yourself.

thank you for all the support and advice, going to work with the doctor on this one and do everything he tells me to until we find the best solution for me.

libby,

Sorry, I missed this post when it went up.

I had the same thing and spent years in real discomfort, unable to eat so many things and always feeling horrid. The thing that fixed me was probiotic supplements. A friend put me onto this:

http://www.ntshealth.com.au/digest-ease.html

A spoonful first thing every morning got rid of all my IBS symptoms and improved my digestion to the point my medications actually worked better lol. I'm sure you'll find something similar on your side of the world.

I'd recommend this more than just using a probiotic yoghurt because you get so much more.

I was so bloody grateful to find something that worked. Hope you do too. Hugs :)
